Street Photography: words of wisdom

Once Loved... by Dave LJ
My friend and fellow street photographer Dave LJ (aka Lovely Jubbly) took the wonderful photo above. We've recently been discussing street photography. Dave sent me the following wise words which are relevant wherever you upload your street photos. They are published here with his full permission:

"There's no doubt that street photography doesn't get anywhere near the number of hits that the "ooh aah" type shots get. That appears to be the same everywhere, even Flickr (spit). As always, most people are impressed by overworked, HD, boring shots that fit into a safe bag. Street is, and always has been, since the days of Cartier-Bresson, on the edge of photography. I think that's why a certain kind of person is attracted to it (us included!).

Maybe it's because the kind of people that vote for the "safe" shots don't understand, and are therefore unable, to vote or offer a critique on hardcore street photography. Pretty pictures are much easier to comment on, whereas a lot of our comments invariably find humour if nothing else. Of course, in the wash up of life, it's the work of the street photographer that will be remembered because we are the ones shooting social history in the making. Think about which pictures we see in articles taken from 100 years ago. It's not the overworked pretty shots of trees or family pets, it's the work of the good old street photographer that comes the the fore."
Many thanks to Dave for allowing me to share his words. Check out Dave's full portfolio at http://www.72dpi.com/gallery/LovelyJubblyOz

Passionate protests

A lot of folk protesting student fees and big corporations being let off from paying billions in unpaid taxes. Some things should be protested with passion! Today's photo a day is dedicated to those taking time to protest.
